In Memoriam
Benson B. Roe M.D., Professor Emeritus of Surgery, passed away on August 6th at the age of 94. Dr. Roe, a pioneer in open heart surgery, had a long and distinguished career at UCSF.

Biography
Ghannam A. Al-Dossari, M.D., M.S. is a heart and lung transplant surgeon and Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF. Dr. Al-Dossari has extensive experience in minimally invasive valve surgery, mechanical circulatory support and heart and lung transplantation. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Born in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Al-Dossari graduated from King Saudi University medical school in 1988. After his internship, he emigrated to the U.S. eventually becoming a U.S. citizen. In 1994, Dr. Al-Dossari completed a 4-year cardiovascular research fellowship at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic, and received a masters degree in surgery based on his extensive research in lung transplantation chronic rejection model.
Dr. Al-Dossari completed his general surgery residency from the University of Minnesota in 1999 and his cardiothoracic surgery training at The University of Texas (UTSWMC) in Dallas in 2001. During that time, Dr. Al-Dossari also received extensive training in heart failure and minimally invasive valve surgery at the University of Minnesota and Cleveland Clinic.
Prior to 2002, Dr. Al-Dossari was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and was instrumental in the development of heart and lung and ventricular assist devices programs in Saudi Arabia.
In 2006, Dr. Al-Dossari held several leadership positions at Saad Specialist Hospital including Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and the Director of Medical Development and Quality Assurance. In March 2012, Dr. Al-Dossari joined the UCSF Department of Surgery in the Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Research Summary
Dr. Al-Dossari has devoted many years of research to the field of heart and lung transplantation. Two publications, in particular, bear emphasis:
- Ventricular assist device therapy for acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock, published in The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Volume 21, issue 1 (January, 2002), p. 106 related to his cardiothoracic research
- Pathogenesis of Obliterative Bronchiolitis. Possible roles of platelet-derived growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor published in Transplantation 1995 Jan 15; 59(1): 143-5 related to his pulmonary research.

UCSF Department of Surgery - Apr 23, 2012Ghannam A. Al-Dossari, M.D., M.S., has joined the UCSF Department of Surgery, Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery as Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery. Dr. Al-Dossari, M.D., M.S. performs heart and lung transplants, and has broad experience in all areas of cardiac and thoracic surgery, many performed using minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Al-Dossari has had a rich and varied career and has been instrumental in the development of heart and lung and ventricular assist devices.
