Message From The Chief

The Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF is comprised of the Cardiac Surgery Program, the Section of General Thoracic Surgery, and the Heart and Lung Transplantation Program. In 2009, the Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery inpatient team had the highest score of any other surgical specialty at UCSF, 83% higher than the UHC Peer group (Press Ganey). 

Practice Sites and Community Affiliations

The Cardiothoracic faculty and staff provide services for patients at UCSF's Parnassus and Mt. Zion Campuses, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, Sequoia Hospital, Contra Costa Medical Center, and St. Mary's Hospital. Our reputation for excellence in the clinical setting, stellar outcomes, and dedication to providing concierge customer service, informs our patients decisions to come to UCSF. Not surprisingly,UCSF's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery attracts patients both nationally and internationally.

Our commitment to research and discovery in areas such as heart failure and lung cancer, is best evidenced within our Cardiac Biomechanics , Cardiothoracic Translational Research , and Thoracic Oncology Laboratories. The cardiothoracic surgery Division is proud to work with our industry partners as well as the National Institute for Health in seeking to translate clinical discoveries into the practice setting where such work is truly meaningful.


Our executive team, management staff and academic and clinical staff are dedicated to serving our community, our faculty, and our academic colleagues. Our division has received accolades from the University's Administration for excellence in patient care service.  The Division's Cardiac Outpatient Clinic was commended for scoring 100% in a patient satisfaction survey for "Likelihood to Recommend." (Press Ganey Associates, Inc.).
